{"id":1163,"date":"2016-02-21T16:08:15","date_gmt":"2016-02-21T21:08:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csbcva.org\/?p=1163"},"modified":"2016-03-02T11:36:08","modified_gmt":"2016-03-02T16:36:08","slug":"as-i-have-loved-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.csbcva.org\/?p=1163","title":{"rendered":"As I Have Loved You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Here are the completed notes from the Sunday AM Service February 21, 2016:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scripture: John 13:34, 35<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vs. 34 &#8211; A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another;<br \/>\nas I have loved you, that ye also love one another.<br \/>\nVs. 35 &#8211; By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples,<br \/>\nif ye have love one to another.<\/p>\n<p>Who is Jesus speaking to? His 11 disciples (Judas has left-vs. 31)<\/p>\n<p>What is the occasion of this passage?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After celebrating the Passover meal (vs.2)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus has washed the disciple\u2019s feet (vs.3-17)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus announced that one of them would betray Him (vs. 18-27)<\/li>\n<li>Judas left to betray Jesus (vs. 27-31)<\/li>\n<li>Dispute or rivalry among the disciples over who would be greatest (See Luke 22:24)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus just spoke about going away (vs.33)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus gives His disciples a new commandment (vs. 34, 35)<\/li>\n<li>Vs. 34 &#8211; A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.<\/li>\n<li>Vs. 35 &#8211; By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This command in one sense was not new:<br \/>\n-Leviticus 19:18 &#8211; Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: \u00a0I am the LORD.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus affirmed this in Matthew 22:36-40<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vs. 36 &#8211; Master, which is the great commandment in the law?<\/li>\n<li>Vs. 37 &#8211; Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.<\/li>\n<li>Vs. 38 &#8211; This is the first and great commandment.<\/li>\n<li>Vs. 39 &#8211; And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.<\/li>\n<li>Vs. 40 &#8211; On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cNeighbor\u201d \u2013 Whoever is beside you at the moment (Darrell Painter)<\/p>\n<h3>Love others!<\/h3>\n<p>But this really is a new commandment \u2013 Notice how they are to love,<em><strong>\u00a0\u201cAs I have loved you\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jesus here raised the standard<\/li>\n<li>He took how we are to love to a whole new level<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again, who is Jesus speaking to? His 11 disciples<\/p>\n<p>Vs. 34 &#8211; A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.<br \/>\nHow did Jesus love His Disciples?<br \/>\nConsider the word Love \u2013<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sacrificial \u2013 giving of ourselves<\/li>\n<li>Unconditional \u2013 He loved the church as it was<\/li>\n<li>Purposefully &#8211; Love depends on the one who chooses to love<\/li>\n<li>Not based on attractiveness, merit or the response of the one loved<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">God\u2019s Word gives a detailed description of this love in 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8a (ESV)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u201cLove is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful, it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Description Broken Down:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Patient<\/li>\n<li>Kind<\/li>\n<li>Envies not<\/li>\n<li>Does not brag<\/li>\n<li>Not arrogant<\/li>\n<li>Never rude<\/li>\n<li>Does not want its own way<\/li>\n<li>Not irritated or angered in personal offence<\/li>\n<li>Devoted to truth<\/li>\n<li>Protects, believes, hopes and endures<\/li>\n<li>Lasting and has permanence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Consider how Jesus loved these disciples and how that translates to how we should love one another as a church<br \/>\nJesus loved His Disciples by:<\/p>\n<p>1. Spending time with them<br \/>\nMark 3:14 &#8211; And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach<\/p>\n<p>The Local Church:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Believers are not to forsake assembling together \u2013 Hebrews 10:25<\/li>\n<li>Invest their lives in one another<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. Telling them the truth<br \/>\nJesus said to Pilate \u2013 For this cause came I unto the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth (John 18:37).<\/p>\n<p>The Local Church:<br \/>\nBelievers are to speak the truth in love \u2013 Ephesians 4:15<\/p>\n<p>3. Pointing them to the Father<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Priority relationship<\/li>\n<li>Love relationship \u2013 John 14:31<\/li>\n<li>Glorifying objective \u2013 John 12:28; John 17:1, 4<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Local Church:<br \/>\nPointing others to God is foundational in everything we do<\/p>\n<p>4. Modeling authentic godliness before them (Example)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>John 13:13-17<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Local Church:<br \/>\nOverflow of our relationship with Christ and growth in Christlikeness<\/p>\n<p>5. Correction<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Peter rebuked by Jesus \u2013 Matthew 16:21-23<\/li>\n<li>James and John rebuked by Jesus \u2013 Luke 9:51-56<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Local Church:<br \/>\nBelievers are to correct one another in humility \u2013 Galatians 6:1<\/p>\n<p>6. Prayer<br \/>\nJohn 17:11-19; Luke 22:32<\/p>\n<p>The Local Church:<br \/>\nBelievers are to pray for one another \u2013 James 5:16; 1 Timothy 2:1<\/p>\n<p>7. Patience and Support<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They lacked spiritual understanding \u2013 Matthew 15:16, 17; 16:9<\/li>\n<li>They lacked humility \u2013 Matthew 20:20-28; Luke 9:46<\/li>\n<li>They lacked faith \u2013 Matthew 8:26, 16:8<\/li>\n<li>They lacked commitment \u2013 Mark 14:50<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Local Church:<br \/>\nOverlook the faults of others \u2013 Proverbs 19:11<\/p>\n<p>8. Commitment<br \/>\nJohn 13:1 &#8211; Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.<\/p>\n<p>The Local Church:<br \/>\nCommitment of church membership<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Commitment up front \u2013 you bind yourself to a group of Christians<\/li>\n<li>Through baptism a person is making a public, upfront commitment to follow Christ &#8211; Church membership attaches that general commitment to follow Christ to a specific group of people<\/li>\n<li>Authentic church community is bound up in something people don\u2019t realize: Church membership<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>9. Moving them toward their mission<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The disciples witnessed firsthand how Jesus ministered to people<\/li>\n<li>He commissioned them to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth \u2013 Acts 1:8<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Local Church:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pastors are given to equip believers for the work of the ministry \u2013Ephesians 4:11<\/li>\n<li>Believers are to exercise their spiritual gifts through the church \u20131 Peter 4:10, 11<\/li>\n<li>And also work together to fulfill the great commission \u2013 Matthew 28:19, 20<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>10. Sacrifice<br \/>\nEphesians 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour<\/p>\n<p>The Local Church:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Move outside our comfort zones for one another<\/li>\n<li>Forgive one another<\/li>\n<li>Giving of your time, resources, gifts and abilities for the furtherance of the ministry of this local church<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Consider the Disciples Previous Occupations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fishermen<\/li>\n<li>Tax Collector<\/li>\n<li>Zealot (Resisted Roman aggression, freedom fighters, extremists, refused to pay taxes to Rome)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vs. 35 &#8211; By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another<\/p>\n<p>Believer\u2019s I.D.
