Failure from the Past<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Missed Opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Hurt you caused some else<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.&#8221; \u00a0-Philippians 3:13-14<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>2. Guilt from the Past<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Missed Opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Sin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. \u00a0For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. \u00a0As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.&#8221; \u00a0-Psalms 103:10-12<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>3. Hurt \/ Wounds from the Past<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Words<\/li>\n<li>Rejection<\/li>\n<li>Betrayal<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cScars remind us of where we have been. \u00a0They don\u2019t have to dictate where we are going.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>4. Bitterness \/ Unforgiveness still there from the Past<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:\u00a0And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ\u2019s sake hath forgiven you.&#8221; \u00a0-Ephesians 4:31<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Bitterness = Smoldering resentment\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cBitterness is like a poison that you prepare for someone else and\u00a0then drink yourself.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Unforgiveness = Not releasing a debt or perceived debt owed\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cWe did nothing to earn our forgiveness. \u00a0Then we cannot make others earn our forgiveness.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>5. Defeated Living Because of the Past<br \/>\nTried so many times to change to no avail<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the\u00a0wicked stumble when calamity strikes.&#8221; \u00a0-Proverbs 24:16<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Steps to Letting Go of the Past:<\/h3>\n<p>1. Understand that through Christ you no longer have to be in bondage to the past<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Born Again \u2013 1 Peter 1:23<\/li>\n<li>New Creation in Christ \u2013 2 Corinthians 5:17<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. Refocus your attention to God\u2019s Truth<br \/>\nWe need to remember that looking back is actually looking away from God\u00a0and our future.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name\u2019s sake.&#8221; \u00a0-1 John 2:12<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.&#8221; \u00a0-1 John 1:9<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>3. Take your past to God and leave it with Him<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGod only looks at your future because He\u2019s canceled out\u00a0your past\u201d. \u2013 Karon Phillips Goodman<\/em><\/p>\n<p>4. Resolve open issues when possible<br \/>\nExample of conflict \/ offences<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.&#8221; \u00a0-Proverbs 19:11<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. \u00a0And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.&#8221; \u00a0-Luke 17:3-4<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. \u00a0But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. \u00a0And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.&#8221; \u00a0-Matthew 18:15-17<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.&#8221; \u00a0-Galatians 6:1<\/p>\n<p>5. Stop replaying the past<br \/>\nChoosing to hold on to the past and pain is by default choosing to let go of God\u2019s peace and our potential.<\/p>\n<p>6.
