Departure from Heaven<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Hebrews 10:5<\/li>\n<li>Philippians 2:7 &#8211; \u201cTook upon Him the form of a servant\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>2. Born as a Man \u2013 Philippians 2:7, 8<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>John 1:1-3, 14<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>3. Took upon Himself the Human Experience<\/h4>\n<p>A. \u201cJesus wept\u201d &#8211; John 11:35<br \/>\nB. Hunger \u2013 Matthew 4:2b<br \/>\nC. Tiredness \u2013 John 4:6<br \/>\nD. Thirst \u2013 John 19:28<br \/>\nE. Death \u2013 Philippians 2:8<\/p>\n<h4>4. Ultimate Self-denial<\/h4>\n<p>A. The Agony of Gethsemane<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Mt. of Olives is located East of Jerusalem<\/li>\n<li>Garden of Gethsemane is located on the Western slope of the Mt. of Olives<\/li>\n<li>A grove of olive trees<\/li>\n<li>Mark 14:32-41<br \/>\nHe began to be sore amazed, and very heavy (vs.33)<br \/>\n\u201cSore amazed\u201d Distressed \u2013 to be alarmed, \u201cto be struck with terror\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cVery heavy\u201d Troubled \u2013 extreme anguish, ill at ease, filled with unrest, uncomfortable within<br \/>\n\u201cMy soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death\u201d (vs.34)<br \/>\nHis soul (his inner self-conscious life) was sorrowful (deeply grieved) even unto death<\/li>\n<li>Luke 22:39-46<\/li>\n<li>Being in agony (vs.44)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAgony\u201d (Word appears only here in the NT) Points to the intensity of Jesus struggle<br \/>\nHis sweat was as it were great drops of blood (vs.44)<br \/>\nBloody sweat \u2013 a rare physiological phenomenon<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A rare but documented occurrence that happens under heavy emotional distress, Capillaries burst under stress and blood mingles with one\u2019s perspiration, exiting through the sweat glands<\/li>\n<li>Speaks of the intense spiritual agony Jesus was under<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Luke 22:42 &#8211; \u201cThis cup\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In the OT God\u2019s wrath and judgment are often pictured as a cup to be drunk \u2013 Isaiah 51:17; Jeremiah 49:12<\/li>\n<li>The cup of being made to be sin for us \u2013 2 Corinthians 5:21<\/li>\n<li>That He might be spared the separation from His Father that being made sin would entail \u2013 Psalm 22:1\n<ul>\n<li>The prospect of alienation from His Father \u2013 the loss of His presence<\/li>\n<li>Perfect communion with the Father broken for the first and only time<\/li>\n<li>God\u2019s wrath against all the sin and rebellion of all the men and women through all ages being poured upon Him<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>When Jesus went to the cross He bore both aspects of death for sinners<\/li>\n<li>Christ experienced physical death \u2013 Matthew 27:50\n<ul>\n<li>Jesus endured spiritual death on the cross, that is separation of His soul from the Father<\/li>\n<li>The evidence is seen in His cry, \u201cMy God, My God, why have you forsaken me?\u201d \u2013 Matthew 27:45<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The penalty for sin is eternal separation from God. This eternal separation is called \u201cthe second death\u201d (Revelation 20:14)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>8. Physical Abuse, Crucifixion, Mocking and Separation<\/h4>\n<p>A. Physical Abuse<\/p>\n<p>1- Abuse by the Religious Leaders<br \/>\nAbuse began before His being handed over to Rome &#8211; Matthew 26:67, 68<\/p>\n<p>2- Scourged \u2013 Matthew 27:26 (Approx. 8AM)<br \/>\nOT Prophecy NT Fulfillment<br \/>\nIsaiah 50:6 Be scourged Matthew 27:26<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Roman scourge was a short wooden handle with numerous\u00a0long lashes of leather attached to it<\/li>\n<li>Each leather strip had a sharp piece of glass, metal, bone or\u00a0other hard object attached to the end of it<\/li>\n<li>The victim would be striped of clothing and tied to a post\u00a0by His wrists with his hands high over his head<\/li>\n<li>Lashes would be delivered across the back and buttocks with extreme force<\/li>\n<li>The skin would literally be torn away, and often muscles were deeply lacerated<\/li>\n<li>Scourging would leave a back a mass of bleeding wounds and quivering muscles<\/li>\n<li>Scourging alone was sometime fatal (some would die of shock)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3- Crowned with thorns \u2013 Matthew 27:29<\/p>\n<p>4- Spit on and struck on the head (after being crowned with thorns) \u2013 vs. 30<br \/>\nOT Prophecy NT Fulfillment<br \/>\nIsaiah 50:6 Be spit upon Matthew 27:39-44<\/p>\n<p>B. Crucifixion &#8211; Matthew 27:35 (Approx. 9AM)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In Jesus\u2019 day, the cross was a concrete and vivid reality.<\/li>\n<li>It was an instrument of execution reserved for Rome\u2019s worst enemies.<\/li>\n<li>It has been estimated that some 30,000 crucifixions occurred under Roman authority during the lifetime of Christ<\/li>\n<li>Crucifixion occurred in a public location (made a public spectacle)<\/li>\n<li>Nailed to the cross \u2013 nail used were similar to a railroad spike but much sharper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>OT Prophecy NT Fulfillment<br \/>\nPsalm 22:16 Piercing of hands and feet Mark 15:25<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As the cross was dropped into the ground, the victim would experience wrenching pain throughout the body, as major joints were suddenly twisted out of their natural position (See Psalm 22:14)<\/li>\n<li>Waves of nausea, fever, intense thirst, constant cramps, throbbing pain<\/li>\n<li>Death normally came through slow suffocation<\/li>\n<li>The victim\u2019s body would hang in such a way that the diaphragm\u00a0was severely constricted<\/li>\n<li>In order to exhale, he would have to push up and he would die from\u00a0lack of oxygen<\/li>\n<li>Searing pain as tissue is torn from his lacerated back as He pushes up and\u00a0comes down against the timber of the cross<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>C. Mocking<\/p>\n<p>A. Prior to the cross \u2013 Matthew 27:27-31<br \/>\nB. While hanging on the cross \u2013 Matthew 27:39-44<br \/>\nOT Prophecy NT Fulfillment<br \/>\nPsalm 22:7, 8 Be mocked Matthew 27:39-44<\/p>\n<p>Additional Information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Marred more than any man \u2013 Isaiah 52:14<br \/>\nIsaiah 52:14 &#8211; As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:<br \/>\nParaphrase from the Living Bible . . . \u201cThey shall see My servant beaten and bloodied, so disfigured one would scarcely know it was a person standing there.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Beard plucked from His face \u2013 Isaiah 50:6<br \/>\nIsaiah 50:6 &#8211; I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>D. Separation &#8211; \u201cELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scripture: Matthew 27:46 (Anguished cry)<br \/>\nSee Psalm 22:1, 14-18 (Psalm 22 offers a vivid account of Jesus death, centuries before He went to the cross)<br \/>\n\u201cELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI\u201d &#8211; Aramaic (Possibly used because our Saviors birth language captures our attention and comes closet to representing the deepest sense of Jesus\u2019 anguish of soul.<br \/>\n\u201cMy God\u201d &#8211; Only time Jesus referred to the Father as God<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Outpouring of Divine wrath upon Him \u2013 Forsaken, deserted, abandon, alienated<br \/>\nWhy did the Father forsake Jesus?<br \/>\nGod the Father forsook His Son then, so that He might never have to forsake us now<\/li>\n<li>See 2 Corinthians 5:21 &#8211; At this moment, God the Father poured on Christ all the sins of mankind, from the beginning of time to the ending of time. Romans 5:8, 9<br \/>\nGod is holy &#8211; separate from sin, absolutely pure<\/li>\n<li>The weight of our sin was borne all alone by Christ, separated from the presence of the Father<br \/>\nRomans 3:23; James 2:10; John 3:36<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>9.
