Reverence for God<\/h3>\n<p>There are more than 150 references in the Bible to the fear of God.<br \/>\nWhile the majority of these are in the OT there are a sufficient number in the NT to support that this is the heart attitude we should cultivate today.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 Peter 2:17 \u201cFear God\u201d (Awe &amp; Reverence)<\/li>\n<li>Acts 9:31 The early church walked in the fear of the Lord<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fear Defined: Fearing God is having a sense of awe or reverence toward Him.<br \/>\nThe person that Fears God becomes so acutely aware of His moral purity and power that one is genuinely afraid to disobey Him.<\/p>\n<p>Characteristics of a Person Who Fears God:<br \/>\nHas a Deliberate Caution and Carefulness in Respect to Divine Things<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Opposite of having an unhealthy, causal and familiar attitude about God and\u00a0spiritual matters &#8211; not flippant with God<\/li>\n<li>Does not have a causal approach to worship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lives in the Conscious Presence of God<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conscious that we are never out of His all-seeing eye<\/li>\n<li>A God fearing person should be the same at all times, knowing he lives every moment of his life in God\u2019s presence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2. Priority of Relationship \u2013 Matthew 22:37<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe most important aspect of Christianity is not the work we do,\u00a0but the relationship we maintain\u201d (Taken from My Utmost for His Highest)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Meeting with God is not an optional<\/li>\n<li>Love for Him overflows to obedience to Him<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>John 14:<br \/>\n21a &#8211; He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me:<br \/>\n23a &#8211; Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words:<br \/>\n24a &#8211; He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A thirst exists to know Him better<\/li>\n<li>No know sin unconfessed or un-repented of and nothing is allowed in life which separates from Him<\/li>\n<li>No interest into which He cannot be brought<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. Moment by Moment Sensitivity to the Spirit \u2013 Galatians 5:16<\/h3>\n<p>Continually walking by the Spirit \u2013 vs. 16<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A yield to the Spirit every moment of every day \u2013 Walk in-step with the Spirit<\/li>\n<li>No neutral ground \u2013 either walking by the Spirit of walking in the flesh (gratifying the flesh)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>4. Disgust of Sin \u2013 Romans 6:12, 13<\/h3>\n<p>Proverbs 8:13 &#8211; \u201cThe fear of the Lord is to hate evil\u201d<br \/>\nAny form of disobedience is evil.<\/p>\n<p>A. Why Sin should be Disgusting to the Christian:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Sin separates from God<\/li>\n<li>Sin leads to death<\/li>\n<li>Sin deceives<\/li>\n<li>Sin destroys families<\/li>\n<li>Sin enslaves<\/li>\n<li>Sin changes futures<\/li>\n<li>Sin has infected you<\/li>\n<li>Sin lead to the crucifixion of Jesus<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>B. Characteristics of Someone Who Tolerates Sin:<\/p>\n<p>1. Puts their happiness and self before their holiness and God<br \/>\n2. Resists the convicting work of the Holy Spirit<\/p>\n<p>How &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>By applying the truth to others instead of their self<\/li>\n<li>Getting angry at the messenger<\/li>\n<li>Puts off dealing with the sin at the moment of conviction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3. Rationalizes their sin<br \/>\n4. Excuses their sin<br \/>\n5. No longer shocked at the presence of sin in their life<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe greatest security against sin is to be shocked at its presence\u201d &#8211; Thomas Carlyle<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>6. Abuses the gift of forgiveness<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The thought lurks in the back of their mind that I can commit\u00a0this act of sin and then confess it later and receive God\u2019s forgiveness.<\/li>\n<li>Displays a lack of gratitude for the price that was paid for their forgiveness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>C. When Sin is not Dealt with in a Believers Life:<\/p>\n<p>1. Fellowship (closeness) with God hindered<br \/>\nPsalm 66:18; Isaiah 59:1-3; Psalm 51:11<br \/>\n2. Impacts our relationships &amp; affects others<br \/>\nGenesis 3 &#8211; Seen in Adam &amp; Eve; Joshua 7<br \/>\n3. Physical impact &#8211; Psalm 32:3-5<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Health<\/li>\n<li>Stress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>4. Escalation of sin<br \/>\nExample of David &#8211; 2 Samuel 11<br \/>\n5. Inviting God\u2019s discipline &#8211; 1 Corinthians 11:31, 32; Hebrews 12:5-11<br \/>\n6. Grieved inwardly<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Loss of joy &#8211; Psalm 51:12a<\/li>\n<li>Grieving the Spirit of God &#8211; Ephesians 4:30<\/li>\n<li>Quenching the Spirit &#8211; 1 Thessalonians 5:19<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>7.
