Defining Undercurrent<\/h3>\n<p>Undercurrent:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A current of water below the surface, moving in a different direction from any surface current<\/li>\n<li>An undercurrent is not an obvious hazard but strong undercurrents can be very dangerous<\/li>\n<li>Some undercurrents are fast and strong enough that they actively pull you along with them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Recognizing an Undercurrent \u2013<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Water with an undercurrent is more likely to be still or have only small waves due to movement of water under the surface<\/li>\n<li>You may see clumps of debris or streaks of mud or sand moving through the water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Defining an Undercurrent of a Different Kind:<br \/>\nAn underlying feeling or influence, especially one that is contrary to the prevailing atmosphere and is not expressed openly<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Something below the surface<\/li>\n<li>Moving in a different direction<\/li>\n<li>Not an obvious hazard, but can be very dangerous<\/li>\n<li>If strong enough can pull you along with them<\/li>\n<li>Movement under the surface<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2. When Undercurrents Exist in the Church:<\/h3>\n<p>A. Gossip \u2013 Spreading of unfavorable information about someone else<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Making negative comments about someone that doesn\u2019t need to be said<\/li>\n<li>Will what I am about to say tend to tear down or build up the person I\u2019m about to talk about?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>B. Slander \u2013 Making a false statement or misrepresentation about another person that defames or damages the person\u2019s reputation<\/p>\n<p>C. Sarcasm and Ridicule (\u201cjust kidding\u201d) \u2013 speech that tends to put down, humiliate, belittle or hurt another person<\/p>\n<p>D. Complaining \u2013 Not happy with what God is allowing in my life at this moment<\/p>\n<p>E. Discontentment<\/p>\n<p>F. Frustration \u2013 The result of some immediate event that has blocked plans or desires<\/p>\n<p>G. Undermining God\u2019s Established Authority<\/p>\n<p>H. Cliques \u2013 Small exclusive circle of people<\/p>\n<p>I. Unforgiveness<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Resentment \u2013 Anger that is held on to (internalized)<\/li>\n<li>Bitterness \u2013 Smoldering resentment, animosity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>J. Critical or Judgmental Spirit<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Looking to find fault with someone or something<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>K. Negativity<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Glass stays half empty person<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>L. Controlling \u2013 Seeking to control others or circumstances to our advantage or to get what we want<\/p>\n<p>M. Carrying out ministry in the flesh<\/p>\n<h3>3. The Danger from Undercurrents in the Church:<\/h3>\n<p>A. Division<br \/>\nStrikes at the heart of unity and being in one accord as a body<\/p>\n<p>B. Distraction<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>God\u2019s glory is diminished<\/li>\n<li>The gospel and reaching the lost are not priority<\/li>\n<li>The hand of God is not acknowledged<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>C. Desertion (from the truth and application of God\u2019s Word)<\/p>\n<p>D. Derailment<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Those on the sidelines that are being exposed to the undercurrents<\/li>\n<li>Those that are being influenced or pulled along by the undercurrents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>E.
