John Gibson Paton was a missionary to the New Hebrides (modern day Vanuatu).  He received much criticism before departing his native Scotland to spread the Gospel in places considered so dangerous.  On one occasion, a Mr. Dickson exploded, “The cannibals! You will be eaten by cannibals!” To this Paton responded:
