Implications of a Resurrected Christ

Here are the completed notes from the Sunday Morning Service March 27, 2016:

Scripture: Matthew 20, Matthew 27

1. It’s all Real

A. He’s Alive!

1- Jesus Predicted His Resurrection

  • Matthew 12:38-40
  • Matthew 16:21
  • Matthew 17:22,23
  • Matthew 20:18,19

2- Scripture Declares His Resurrection

3- The Empty Tomb Reveals His Resurrection

  • John 20:1-8

4- Resurrection Appearances Authenticate His Resurrection:

  • Eyewitness Accounts (11 documented accounts)

B. Scripture is established as credible

All that is recorded in Scripture is true and reliable

1- Jesus believed the OT to be the very Words of God

  • Matthew 5:17, 18 – Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

  • Matthew 22:29 – Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
  • Matthew 24:35 -Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
  • Luke 24:27 – And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

2- In His recorded words, He referenced 14 OT books

  • Jesus actually quoted from the OT

3- He believed the history of the people and events recorded in the OT

4- Jesus anticipated the NT writings –John 14:26; 16:12-15

  • John 14:26 – But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
  • John 16:12-15 – 12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. 14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you. 15All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall show it unto you.

2. There will be a face to face encounter with the risen Lord

  • Hebrews 9:27 – And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
  • John 5:22 – 2For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
  • Philippians 2:10-11 – 10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

3. There is a heaven to be gained and a hell to be shunned

A. Heaven – John 14:1-6
“We don’t seek to escape this life by dreaming of heaven, but we do find
we can endure this life because of the certainty of heaven.”
According to Revelation 21:4 the following will be absent in the believer’s eternal home:

  • “Tears”
  • “Death”
  • “Sorrow”
  • “Crying”
  • “Pain”

B. Hell – Luke 16:19-31

Hell according to Jesus . . .

  • A place of torments – Luke 16:23
  • A place of Fire – Luke 16:24
  • A place where people will seek relief and find none – Luke 16:24-26
  • A place of thirst – Luke 26:2
  • A place of no escape for all eternity – Luke 16:26
  • A place where man will experience the undiluted wrath of God and separation from Him for eternity

4. There is a message to proclaim

Missions Mandate – Mark 16:15

  • The mandate – “Go”
  • The who – “You”
  • The where – “All the world” – World-wide focus
  • The what – “Preach”
  • The message – “The gospel”

5. There is a hope to embrace

13But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.  -I Thessalonians 4:13-17
