Scripture: Mark 16
1. The Women
Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, Salome and
Luke (24:10) implies Joanna, and other women also
- Mary Magdalene went to the tomb prior to the other women, while it was still dark (John 20:1)
- The other women mentioned here came at the rising of the Sun (Mark 16:2)

1st two appearances were to Women
The four gospels name women as the first witnesses to discover the empty tomb – in ancient culture, female testimony in important matters was widely dismissed
2. The Stone Rolled Away – Mark 16:3, 4
The stone would have weighted 1 ½ to 2 tons
- Mark doesn’t mention that after Jesus was laid in the tomb, a guard had inspected the tomb, the stone had been rolled into place that according to Matthew 27:66 the stone was sealed. This sealing was a cord stretched across the rock and fastened at either end with sealing clay
- The clay packs were stamped with the official signet of the Roman governor
- The seal gave warning that the tomb was under Roman protection
3. An Unexpected Visitor – Mark 16:.5-7
A. His Description:
- A young man
- Clothed in a long white garment
B. His Message:
- Don’t be afraid (vs.6a)
- Confirmation of the crucifixion (vs.6b)
- Announces – “He is risen” (vs.6c)
- Invites their inspection (6d)
Verse 7
- Go tell his disciples, and Peter
- He is risen
- You will see Him in Galilee
- He has said this to you
4. Empty Tomb – Mark 16:6
A. The broken seal and stone rolled away – John 20:1; Matthew 27:65, 66
- The seal gave warning that the tomb was under Roman protection
- The stone would have weighted 1 ½ to 2 tons
B. Empty Tomb – John 20:2; Luke 24:3; Matthew 28:6; Mark 16:6
C. The Grave Clothes – John 20:6, 7
- No grave robber would have taken the time to leave behind the grave clothes
D. The Location of the Tomb – John 19:41
- Walking distance from Jerusalem
- The apostles began preaching the gospel at Jerusalem – Acts 2:32
